being amish (at heart)

over the past year I've noticed the Amish more than I ever have. I've followed behind their buggies, smiled at the children and visited their stands. While I haven't envied their lack of speed, I have given wistful thought to their simple way of living.

"If I were Amish..." I think to myself, "things would be simpler". It would be harder, but simpler and more honest feeling. It's the feeling I get when I drive our car, the one that's not new, the one we own outright. It doesn't matter how it looks, that it's over 10 years old, it matters that it's ours and we owe no one anything for it. It's the feeling I get when I wander out to the garden and pick lettuce for dinner (not the time I set fire to the frying pan, the other time when the stove was off).

So, maybe I shouldn't be thinking about trying to be Amish, mostly cause I'm not and that wouldn't be honest. But trying to keep that simple mindset, avoiding seeking material goods and earthly prosperity, and not minding some good honest hard work to get things done.

Don't get me wrong I'm still going to use my toaster, but just maybe I won't buy a new one when there is a new faster way to brown my bread.

You keep getting all this blog comment spam! Must be annoying. :)

Anyway, I'm sometimes attracted to the simple life of the Amish and other communities. Not sure how to make it work though... I'm too used to the "stuff" I have, I guess.
